Keep Your Home Decor Aesthetic While Still Incorporating Those Seasonal Feels!

It’s that time of year where everyone is decorating for fall, and soon enough, winter and Christmas too! It can be such a heavy lift to completely swap out all your decor for each seasonal change. Not to mention, the feel of your house totally changes too! That’s why we’re huge fans of incorporating seasonal decor that already matches your home aesthetic and design. What’s that entail? Glad you asked! Today we’re going to look at a few different factors: color palette, accessories, and scent.

Color Palette

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to completely change your color palette for the season! Not everyone wants bright reds, oranges, and yellows in their home for the fall season. We can totally relate. That’s why we’re all about finding pieces and subtle changes that bring the spirit of the season into the space without compromising your personal style.

Accessories are the best way to accomplish your subtle changes for the season. Try swapping out your usual throw pillows for something more seasonal. This doesn’t have to be something big and bold like a throw pillow with a huge pumpkin on it. We love plaid and cable knit pillows for someone looking for a cozy fall feel. Cable knit pillows are especially great as they can easily transition into winter too! Adding a couple of extra beautiful throw blankets is also a great option to cozy up your home for the cooler seasons. They add texture, color, and snuggly warm when needed. Dried hydrangeas and white pumpkins are some of our other favorite accessories to add a nice subtle pop of fall. They can go with almost any decor color palette and are quick and easy changes to make!

Scent is one of the easiest ways to change the feel of a room without even changing anything! Fall scented candles and wax melts instantly give you that warm, cozy fall feeling without even lifting a finger on your decor. Same with balsam and the like for the winter season. If you do choose to change up your decor, changing up your scent really adds that extra touch to finish off your seasonal wonderland!

Blanket Ladder or Basket

In most places, blankets aren’t needed year round, but they sure do look pretty if styled correctly. We love having a beautiful storage solution for your blankets. If you have room, we love love LOVE a simple ladder to hang blankets on in your living room. If space is more of an issue, grab a fun bin or basket to put on your fireplace and fill with your favorite throws. This will keep your couch looking more organized with the blankets being kept separate.

We love clocks! Wall clocks, tabletop clocks… you name it, we love it. The functionality of clocks is also clear: to tell time. Work a wall clock into your gallery wall or a tabletop clock into your shelves. We use baskets everywhere. Here’s the thing about baskets, if you pick the right ones, they’re pretty BUT you can also use them to hide so much stuff! Little things you don’t want to be seen can easily slide into a basket. We love using them in closets, in the bathroom, and even in the living room. They’re a great organizational tool, but organizational tools can be pretty and functional!

Wooden Cutting Boards

Wooden cutting boards are beautiful and add a rich pop of color to your kitchen. It also keeps them handy for when you’re prepping your food! We love wooden cutting boards because overtime, plastic ones can actually start to break down and pieces can end up in your food… ew! So, showcasing your wooden cutting boards adds some easy decor but also a safer alternative for chopping.

May Flowers: How to Incorporate Florals into Your Home

April showers bring May flowers… to your home decor! Are you a lover of florals? We are too! But when it comes to incorporating them into your home more than a vase of flowers here or there, it can get tricky to manage. What’s too much? Is there a such thing as too much? How will it fit in with my style? All are good questions! So today, we’re going over our five favorite ways to tie the floral decor into your home, whether you want something super bold, or more subtle.

Floral patterned furniture can certainly be that “wow” statement piece you’re looking for! Brighten up your living room with a fun floral chair. Or, go more subtle with a floral painted dresser or end table. We love the huge range of styles and power that furniture offers. If you’re looking for a fun floral DIY project, try your hand at painting your own florals on an end table!

Wallpaper also gives you the chance to really make a statement, or keep things more low key. We recommend selecting one or even two feature wall(s) versus wallpapering an entire room with your floral pattern. This really highlights its beauty without becoming overpowering. Easy to adapt to your current style, there are all sort of patterns and color palettes to choose from when it comes to floral wallpaper.

Wall Art

Committing to actual wallpaper giving you anxiety? No worries, it’s not for everyone! Lucky for you, there are so many beautiful ways to incorporate floral wall art into your home. Whether it’s a funky 3D frame, or more of a hanging piece, there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking to go even more relaxed and basic, hang some photographs in regular frames that highlight some of your favorite flowers!

Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are a really easy way to add in those floral accents. Mix in some bright and fun patterns with your regular throw pillows or switch out seasonally! There’s really no way to go wrong here. Who doesn’t love a good throw pillow?

Dishes can be a fun and unique way to bring the look into your home! Whether it be for everyday use or special occasions, more and more companies are coming out with fresh, young floral dishes. These aren’t your Grandma’s beautiful China pieces, they have a very different feel to them. If the classic China is more your speed, we also love that look! It all depends on your style and how much of a pop you’re looking to add.

Try This Super Simple DIY to Brighten Up Any Home!

Lake and DIY 035.JPG

It’s hard to believe that spring has sprung and tomorrow is May… but we’re not complaining! April showers bring May flowers, so today we’re sharing a super easy DIY to start to bring those flowers into your home. Bright, fun wreaths are a simple way to incorporate that color and give your home an extra, welcoming pop of color. Part of why we love this wreath is that you can leave it up throughout the spring and summer months, and we love a versatile piece of decor made on a budget! This whole project cost a grand total of $13, how can you say no to that? Make sure you check for coupons before you head to your craft store, they always have sales going on!

What You’ll Need:

Lake and DIY 030.JPG
  • 2 tulip bunches in your desired color(s)
  • 18 inch grapevine wreath
  • Garden scissors or wire cutters
  • Hot glue gun
  • Garden wire (optional)

How to Assemble:

  1. Deconstruct your tulip bunches so you have a bunch of individual stems. Make sure to cut decent length stems as we’ll be tucking them into the wreath.
  2. While your hot glue gun warms up, start placing your tulip stems around the outer half of your wreath to test out spacing and placement.
  3. Once you have decided where you want your stems to be, start securing them in place with hot glue. If you’re worried you’re going to change your mind on placement, instead wrap each stem with garden wire to secure. Or, use a combination for extra tight security.
  4. Once your stems are all secured and in place, hang your wreath and enjoy! How simple was that?!

How to Make Your Guest Room Feel Like a Home Away from Home

We love having friends and family come to visit. Whether they’re traveling from near or far, it’s important to have a nice, comfortable space for them to stay. Guest rooms are one of the sometimes overlooked areas of the home. Luckily, there are a few small tweaks you can make to yours to make it nice and home-y for your guests! And even better, these simple changes won’t break the bank and are perfect for the everyday girl budget.

Match Your Home Aesthetic

You don’t want your guests to feel like they’re being shipped off to a dull, empty space. Try to keep the aesthetic of the home carried through the guest room too. Whether you have a light and bright look or pops of color, find even little ways to incorporate this same feeling into the space.

Leave out Towels

Many people don’t think to lay out some towels for guests. Obviously, they can easily ask, but by providing them upon arrival, you avoid the hassle. This is also convenient for if they tend to shower either late at night or early in the morning when you may not be awake. Along the same lines, make sure your bathroom is fully stocked with shower supplies and toilet paper!

Provide Extra Pillows and Blankets

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to the amount of pillows and blankets they use at night. Or maybe your home runs cooler than theirs, so taking the time to provide these extra comforts can go a long way!

Space to Unpack

Depending on how long a stay your guests have, they may want to unpack their bags. Whether it’s a simple dresser or some hangers in the closet, make sure there’s somewhere for your guests to put their clothes if they so choose.

What’s the Wifi?

In our technological era, one of the first questions people seem to ask is “what’s your wifi password?” We love the idea of leaving a cute little framed note with the login info for your guests to use. That way, if they have multiple devices, they don’t need to repeatedly ask you for the password.

A Hidden Oasis

Sometimes your guests may want a little space and break from the togetherness of your visit. The guest room should be a hidden oasis where your guests can escape to take a breather. If you have the space, try to make this a separate living space for them to go relax. Some comfy chairs, maybe a TV or filled bookcase, can go a long way.

You're About To Fall In Love With Opalhouse-Target's Newest Home Brand!

Spring 2018 is all about rich colors, rich patterns, and rich textures, but you don’t have to be rich to get on top of this trend! Target’s new Opalhouse brand is both affordable and full of gorgeous, on-trend pieces to step up your home decor game. Opalhouse launches officially on April 8th, but a sneak look has us in love already!

We love Target’s Project 62 brand, and we’re still head over heels for Chip and Joanna’s Hearth & Hand collab with the store, but Opalhouse brings an eclectic touch that is so on-trend and stylish that we can’t wait to redecorate come springtime! The brand was inspired by travel, as the Target design team explored all over to pull inspiration for an innovative take on home decor. They’ve also chosen to incorporate tons of personal artwork from the design team, like this gorgeous floral wallpaper featured above that’ll look stunning in any kitchen!

As if the beautiful tones and colors in this collection aren’t great enough, Target also announced that the majority of the brand is priced under $30. With everything from vases to wallpaper to throw pillows to shower curtains, a complete home decor overhaul is in order, and it’s totally possible on a tight budget!

Rattan chair.jpg

Everything in the 1,300 piece collection is ornate but still minimalist, and in most cases, the color or texture of the piece speaks for itself. There’s even going to be a line of furniture! We’re already obsessed with this Rattan chair. Although it’s likely going to be one of the more pricey pieces in the collection, it’s absolutely gorgeous, looks to be well-made, and it’s the perfect accent piece to bring some texture and a tropical feel into your living room!

Bring in pops of springtime fun with deep colors instead of the typical pastels. This mustard throw pillow pairs incredibly with this emerald green throw blanket, and even though these are colors that normally don’t scream spring, they totally work together to offer up an unexpected element of color!

Add a Pop of Color to Your Coffee Table with this Simple DIY

The weather’s getting warmer, spring is inching closer, and floral DIYs are already taking over 2018. There’s so many options, from making your own jewelry out of of fresh flower or crafting your own custom boxed arrangement. You can even make a chic and minimalist wall clock out of roses! But some of these trendy DIYs can be a bit intimidating, with dozens of steps and pricey materials. Instead, grab a few petals from an arrangement you already have, pick up some dollar store picture frames, and make an adorable pressed flower coaster! They’re quick, simple, and look far more expensive than they actually cost to make.

These gorgeous coasters can be an affordable way to bring some more florals into a springtime wedding! Press some of the same flowers you’ll have in your bouquet and use them at your cocktail hour or gift them to your bridal party. Or, if you’re feeling crafty on a rainy spring day, make a set with some of your favorite flowers to glam up your coffee table with a bright pop of color!

Handmade’s version of this DIY is especially charming, and we love the vintage look they went with for their set. The gold foil edge is so on trend right now, but change the tape up to match your decor or event theme. If you’re feeling extra artsy, you can make tiny arrangements on each glass to really bring a charming and original touch to every coaster! We love the ones featured on Brit + Co. The colors are vibrant and the arrangements are quirky - it’s the perfect way to add a touch of springtime fun to your decor!

Below is Brit + Co’s step-by-step tutorial that any beginner would be able to follow!

  1. Arrange the flowers on top of four of the glass coasters.
  2. Secure the flowers down with a small dab of E6000 glue.
  3. Sandwich the flowers with another glass tile.
  4. Trim a 16.5 inch piece of copper tape and adhere it along the edges of the glass tiles. Try to center the copper tape as much as possible. This will help make the copper border look as clean and consistent as possible.
  5. Press the excess copper tape down to create the copper border detail.
  6. Run a smooth object along the copper tape to flatten any ridges that may have formed.

There’s just something about burning candles that makes a room feel extra cozy. Whether it be the warm, flickering flame or the yummy scent, there is an undeniable ambiance in candles! If you are unable or prefer not to actually burn candles, there are some beautiful and convincing LED candles available for purchase at home and craft stores.

Warm Lighting

Warm lighting is just that -- warm! Opt for warm white bulbs versus cool white. Depending on the room and your style, add some fairy or icicle lights and omit traditional lighting all together. This will really make a space feel more cozy and intimate.

Textured Blankets

We love blankets, and the cold winter is the perfect time to showcase them! Choose a mixture of textures and neutral colors to add more depth to the space. Add in some decorative throw pillows and you have an irresistible place to snuggle up for an afternoon nap.

Fuzzy Rug

Give your toes something cozy too! A nice, thick, fuzzy rug creates an inviting space and screams cozy. Pick a nice neutral that will match the rest of your room and easily transition between any style or design changes you make.

Roaring Fire

There’s nothing quite like snuggling up next to a warm fire. The crackling heat is the best. Snuggled up on the couch under your blanket and watching a movie by the light of the fire? Yes please! No fireplace? Throw on a virtual fire with the Netflix stream! Still get the look and the sound, just no heat.

Hot Cocoa

Hot cocoa is the perfect beverage for a cold winter night. Have you tried the Chai Hot Chocolate recipe we shared last month? It’s to die for! Make up a batch to please the whole crowd. Don’t forget the marshmallows!

Book Nook

Snuggle up in your designated reading corner. We love the idea of having a quaint book nook in our home. Filled with pillows and textured blankets, you may end up falling asleep instead of reading, but it will certainly be cozy!

Fresh Warm Cookies

Who doesn’t love a batch of freshly baked cookies?! Or, step up your game and make a skillet cookie to share with the group. Either way, the warm gooey cookies combined with their heavenly aroma adds another level of coziness and hominess to your place.

Himalayan Salt Lamp

Have you heard of all the health benefits provided by a Himalayan salt lamp? They work to add negative ions into the air, purifying it and removing toxins. This calms asthma and allergy symptoms, increase levels of serotonin in the brain, boost blood flow and improve sleep. Bonus: it gives off a beautiful warm light!

Classical or Jazz Music

Set the mood with some smooth jazz or soft classical music. There’s something soothing about these two styles of music that just increasing our relaxation and makes us feel warm inside. Use that to your advantage to add the final touch onto your cozy oasis!

Meet Kristen of Charleston Candle Co.

Have you ever had such a passion for something that you feel inclined to start a business to honor it? Meet Kristen, owner of Charleston Candle Co. We caught up with Kristen to hear all about her love for Charleston, what led to her decision to create a candle line to honor her city, and her number one tip for anyone thinking of starting their own business. Be sure to check out her shop and follow her on Instagram!

PI: We love that you find inspiration for your scents from Charleston landmarks! What drew you to the city and the idea of creating scents based off of its landmarks?

KS: I moved to Charleston in 2013 after my husband and I got married – he was still attending school which was the practical reason for living here, but we both knew we wanted to stay in Charleston.  There is so much history here and always something to do.  I love how each part of Charleston has its own unique identity.

PI: Have you ever thought about starting another candle collection inspired by another city?

KS: I have briefly thought about collections based on other cities, but I’m not sure I could really do another city justice since I have such a passion for Charleston.  We are definitely working on more collections that aren’t necessarily Charleston-specific, but will still be southern inspired.

PI: What’s your favorite scent?

KS: My favorite scent overall is “The Gold Bug” candle from our Fall Collection.  It has such a unique and pretty scent that I really could have burning all year long.  From our signature scents, it’s hard to pick a favorite – but I really love “Sweetgrass Basket” and “Sunday Brunch Mimosa”.  They both have fresh, vibrant smells that always remind me of being downtown on the weekend.

PI: What made you want to venture into the candle business?

KS: I started making candles for fun, but when I thought of pairing candle scents to different places and ideas from Charleston, I thought others might love a fun reminder of their time here too.  Candles are one of those things that you can never have too many of – and always provide a relaxing and calming presence to any space.  I love that our candles go a step further and help our customers relive special memories from Charleston.

PI:  What tips do you have for someone looking to start their own business?

KS: So many people have amazing ideas for a new product or service, but in an “Etsy World” it’s easy to get lost among the thousands of other new businesses that are always popping up.  What makes your product or idea special?  Figure out your motivation behind what you’re selling, because that is what customers are going to buy into before they commit to purchasing a product or service from you.

We’re so excited to share one of Kristen’s deliciously scented Christmas candles. Head over to Instagram for your chance to win!

Meet Ashley of Kaktos Rose

We were lucky enough to chat with Ashley Futris, one half of the sister-owned Kaktos Rose duo, about what it’s like to work with your sister, their Silobration experience, and more! Katie and Ashley started Kaktos Rose after seeing so many products that they loved and thinking “we can do that.” Starting with metal art and branching out into cake topper and beyond, Kaktos Rose was born. Be sure to check out their site, and Instagram account too!

PI: Where do you find your inspiration?

AF: Oh man, we find it all over, I would especially while traveling!

PI: Living in Waco, how was it to be a part of the Silobration experience?

AF: It’s always so nice to meet people from all over the country and the world. We make great contacts for different retailers and most are happy to see that we are able to do custom! The silos have been a huge part of the growth of our business and the city itself!

PI: Did watching your mom start her own business ease the process of you starting Kaktos Rose?

AF: My Mom and Dad have always been go-getters, so we grew up that way. I guess you could say it eased it, but I’d use the word inspired it. Being a small business owner and entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Takes an extra amount of grit!

PI: How is it working together as sisters?

AF: It’s great. We both have different styles and different points of view and that actually works really well! You’d think it would make things more complicated but it just broadens our spectrum of customers we reach.

PI: What’s your favorite item to make?

AF:The custom coordinates are my favorite. People request them for where they met each other, a special place in the hearts, first home, etc. I think it’s the best, thoughtful most unique gift!

I think that’s the most important thing to remember and success does not happen overnight

PI: What tips do you have for someone looking to start their own business?

AF: The time. Holidays don’t really exist, but there’s something so satisfying about building and creating something yourself and being successful. You aren’t always successful and I think that’s the most important thing to remember and success does not happen overnight. I know too many people that want to start their own business and think that it’s going to be instant success and every trade show you do is a win and that you have all this free time because you are your own boss, but that is not the case. You have to be ready to pour your entire being into it and get a little beat up along the way and realize it’s so very worth it!

Totally in love with Kaktos Rose? Us too! Head over to our Instagram account for a chance to win this beautiful ornament!
