How to Keep Your Skin Glowing Through the Cold Weather Transition

Well, here in New England we’re certainly feeling that fall weather now! The seasonal change sure is exciting, but the cooler, drier weather can easily do a number on your skin. You may find yourself already reaching for lotion more often or itching some dry skin. While it’s a somewhat easy fix for your body, what about for your face? You want to keep it moisturized without completely blocking your pores. Plus, we’re in the in-between weather where it’s freezing in the morning and at night, but gets pretty warm mid-day and occasionally brings on that little bit of face shine no one wants. Girl, we’ve got you covered.

Three words: Moisturizing Matte Primer.

If you don’t usually use a primer in your daily makeup routine, we suggest trying one out now. Our pick is the CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Primer. Why do we love this primer? For one, it’s great at doing what a primer is intended to do -- hold your makeup in place all day long. It’s a great matte option so that even if you have oily skin, your face should stay shine-free throughout the day. But the key for this transitioning weather is picking a primer like this one that will keep you moisturized, too!

L’Oréal’s Lash Paradise waterproof mascara has a great formula paired with an excellent brush. The brush helps to boost and volumize your lashes up while the formula helps protect your lashes from whatever the summer throws at you without getting too flakey!

Up Your Makeup Game with These Essential Tools

They say a craftsman is as good as his tools, and the same goes for makeup! It’s remarkable how much your makeup skills can improve by using the right brushes. Here’s how to differentiate between different brushes and our picks for essentials!

Let’s start with foundation.

Synthetic Buffing Brush

A brush like this can help create an airbrushed finish to your foundation. Aim to get a brush that is dense and fluffy, and synthetic so it won’t soak up all of your foundation!

Beauty Sponge

Using a damp sponge to apply your foundation will leave you looking flawless! Blending is so seamless and the pointed end helps get the under eye perfectly.

Moving onto face powders.

Setting Brush

A tapered fluffy brush like this is perfect for setting the under eyes and rest of the face!

Contour and Blush Brush

An firm angled brush like this gives you a precise contour and can also be used for blush.

Highlighting

When it comes to highlighting you can either choose a wide fan brush or a small domed brush. It comes down to personal preference, but in the end either brush will leave you glowing!

Eyes

Fluffy Crease Brush

A fluffy tapered brush is the secret to blending! One like this is the perfect size to seamlessly blend the crease.

Detail Brush

This slim brush can be used in the crease to get more precision and detail.

Shader Brush

This dense brush is perfect for packing shadow on the lids.

Highlighting Brush

A small precise brush like this is perfect for highlighting the inner corner and brow bone.

Finally, the brows and lips.

Eyebrow Brush

This dense brush helps fill in the eyebrows with ease, plus it has a spoolie on the end to help blend in the product!

Concealer Brush

This synthetic concealer brush helps carve out the brows and correct any mistakes!

Lip Brush

This pointed lip brush helps create a precise application that most applicators cannot get!

Holiday Makeup Trends

HEADER.jpg

This winter holiday season boasts a wide variety of makeup trends, and we are so excited to try them all! Whether you just wear foundation or always have a full face of makeup, there is a trend to suit your style. We have listed our seven favorite makeup trends, and product suggestions, to help you recreate the looks!

Classic Red Lip
The classic red lip is a holiday makeup staple. It is bold, bright, and sexy. Keep the rest of your face neutral during the day, then spice it up with a smoky eye or cat eye for evening celebrations. We recommend any M.A.C Cosmetics lip products in the color Ruby Woo. It is super pigmented and complements all skin tones.

Clean Face & Strong Nudes
If you’re a concealer and done girl this trend is for you. The clean face & strong nudes trend focuses on natural beauty. Use beige and earth tones to enhance and accentuate your eyes, cheeks, and lips. Think natural glow and dewy skin. You can still be glamorous while keeping it simple. We love Urban Decay’s Naked Eyeshadow Palettes (they contain soft gold and rose hues), Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipsticks (there are numerous nude shades), and Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Color Blush (the two neutral shades are amazing!).

Burgundy Smokey Eye
Burgundy is one of the richest and most flattering of all the fall colors. It looks beautiful on all skin tones and pairs perfectly with both brown and black liners. Wear it with a nude lip and slightly shimmery cheek to really make your eyes stand out. For a simpler look just blend the burgundy into your crease and lower lash line; for a bold look do a full burgundy smokey eye and blend with browns or pinks depending on how dark you want your smokey eye. Try Tarte’s Tarteist Metallic Shadow in Scarlet.

Metallic Makeup
Metallic makeup is transitioning from a fall trend to a winter trend and we love it! Metallics are shimmery and fun and the perfect way to express your personality via makeup. While fall metallics focus on gold tones, winter metallics focus on silver and blue tones. Add more metallic colors to your makeup palette for the holidays like red or purple metallic lips or green metallic eyeshadow. See our metallic trends 2017 article for product suggestions!

Glossy Lips
Channel your inner thirteen year old self for this winter holiday beauty trend-- glossy lips! Glosses are a great way to add shine and color to your lips without the fuss of smudgy lipsticks. Lip gloss can range from clear or neutral in color to bright and bold. Swipe a more subdued gloss across your lips if you want to highlight your natural beauty or are trying to accentuate your eye makeup. Use a more pigmented gloss to draw attention to your lips and show your fun personality. M.A.C lipglasses are amazing glosses that come in many colors, are not too sticky, and smell great!

Graphic Liner
The most daring holiday makeup trend this season is the graphic liner look. It is defined by sharp edges, unusual placement, open endedness, bold lines, and color. With the graphic liner, there is usually an absence of eyeshadow, since the liner is flashy enough on its own. Try an open ended cat eye or thick and squared off shape. Your favorite gel or liquid liner will work for this trend!

Long Lashes
Whether it’s accomplished with mascara or falsies, every woman strives to have long lashes. This holiday season super long lashes are the one beauty must have. If you have the time, skill, and patience invest in some false lashes and make your eyes bright and wide. If false lashes are not your style invest in mascaras and mascara wands that focus on lengthening your lashes. We love Benefit Cosmetics’ Roller Lash Curling Mascara. It completely eliminates the need to curl your lashes beforehand and your lashes will have never looked so long!

DIY Brush Pad and Soap Cleaner

diy.png

Before we begin to embrace the colorful leaves falling, pumpkin spice everything, and curling up in your favorite sweater, we unfortunately have to let go of summer. A good way to start off the new season is with some clean brushes! This is our secret tip on how to clean your makeup brushes quick and without having to purchase expensive soap or a brush pad.

A DIY brush pad is so simple, all you need is a flat and plastic surface and some hot glue. You can use a clean lid to a container, a plastic plate, plastic cutting board, or even a plastic clip board! Once you have the item of your choice ready you can use the hot glue to create different patterns across the plate. We recommend doing some various sized dots, chevrons, straight lines, and a grid pattern. Once the glue is dry it's all good to use!

Now that you have your own DIY makeup brush pad, why not make some DIY brush soap too? All you need to do is pour two parts antibacterial dish soap with one part extra-virgin olive oil into a small glass/plastic dish. Next, you simply dampen your brush with lukewarm water, dip it into the soap, and swirl it around on the various patterns on your pad. Once the brush is clean you can gently rinse the excess soap out with lukewarm water and place the brushes slanted with the bristles down on a paper towel to dry. And voila! Your brushes are clean and ready for whatever makeup look you’re ready to tackle next!

Winter Gathering

When creating this Winter Gathering concept, Parsimony Inspired's vision was to embrace the color palette of winter but balance the look with soft feminine accents. We created a design with hues of creams, greys and greens, a palette that we softened with flowing fabrics, gold accents and mixed textures.

Tucked in the mountains of the Berkshires, Bloom Meadows was the perfect backdrop for this romantic winter shoot. A space with beautiful lines, natural elements and neutral colors, our designs felt rooted in the space and allowed our soft color palette to pop against the beautiful white walls. We loved the venue's design so much we had our invitation designer Kim Small of With Wild and Grace draw the venue and add it to the elegant invitation suite's design. One of our favorite ways to add a custom detail.

Our bride was styled in a stunning chiffon A-line Lilian West gown. The illusion V-neck and the detail of the lace appliqués also brought a feminine touch to the bridal look, while the long sleeves and chapel length train were the perfect look for a winter wedding. The hair style framed our bride's face with greenery touches while soft makeup with a smokey eye gave a bit of drama to the final look. To add a little sparkle to our bride's style, she wore a stunning engagement ring and wedding band set designed by Megan Thorne and stunning hand crafted moonstone earrings designed by Pamela Froman.

When it came to working with floral designer Stacey Radcliffe of The Tangled Grapevine, we knew that we wanted the flowers to be filled with different types of greenery, our favorite trend for 2017. We incorporated greenery in every aspect of the design from the aerial floral installation above our reception table to greenery in our bride's hair. Stacey created a lush presentation bouquet filled with white Anemone, silver Brunia, white Lisianthus, peach Spray Roses, white Tulips, seeded Eucalyptus, Ruscus, Asparagus Fern and Gooseneck Loosestrifes.

From the serene Berkshire winter setting, the soft and romantic invitation suite with it's perfect vellum wax seal to the amazing marbled cakedesigned by the talented Pete of Pete's Sweets, we balanced winter's neutral palette and elements of nature with soft fabrics, feminine touches and meaningful details that would make you want to spend a winter's eve snuggled up with the one you love.

With the sweltering sun and heat, the last thing we want to deal with is our makeup melting off our face. This season, take a step back from the layers of foundation and eyeshadow, and opt for a more natural makeup look! Use lighter-weight powders, liquid foundation with SPF, and soft skin tones to bring out your natural beauty!

Along with summer comes dryer skin. Exfoliating your skin daily is a must in order to keep that healthy summer glow! Instead of using a harsh exfoliating scrub, try one of our favorite peel-pads! If you need a little boost in moisture in your skin, try this pore perfecting water gel moisturizer!

Spring Inspiration Board

Spring is in the air and we couldn’t be more excited to put those cold winter days behind us! We’re celebrating with fun, pastel colors and florals galore. This spring, the natural makeup look is back with subtle shadows and no more overdrawn lips or brows. For everyday fashion, everything is flirty and off-the-shoulder. Florals are being incorporated everywhere, between hairstyles, patterns on skirts, and even signage and favors for your big day!We are seriously loving these style trends heading into warmer weather!

How to Contour

Contouring and highlighting your face are tasks that every girl wishes to master. Although we are not all equipped with a glam squad to flawlessly apply our makeup like Kim Kardashian, we have found an easy step-by-step tutorial on how to get those cheekbones chiseled and those eyes bright with just a few simple steps using different shades of your favorite foundation! All you will need are three different shades of foundation: your skin tone, one that is one or two shades darker than your skin tone, and one that is one or two shades lighter.

1. Prepare your skin and apply your normal skin shade foundation as you typically would.

2. Use the darker foundation and start “tracing” your face: your temples near your hairline, the hollows of your cheekbones, and your jaw line. For a starter tutorial, it is easy to make a giant “3” on each side of your face, with the top of the “3” tracing your temple, the middle your cheek, and the bottom your jaw.

3. Use the lighter foundation to highlight underneath your eyes, the bridge of your nose, forehead and chin.

4. Blend the created lines smoothly with a makeup sponge or beauty blender.

5. To finish, lightly apply loose powder on the entire face.

Tada! You now have that flawless facial structure and glow without needing that glamor squad! Go out, try different shades, and happy contouring!

How to Find a Perfect Foundation

We’ve all been there—helplessly staring at all the products the eye can see, lost in the vast land of foundations, and completely and utterly unsure of which to buy. To make decisions easier, there are a few steps to take in order to find that ultimate foundation that is just right for you!

Understanding your skin type is a huge part in the decision process of buying foundation that’s right for your skin! If you have dry skin, try using double-duty liquid foundations that not only smooth out your skin’s surface, but also hydrates it, giving you that glow your skin so desperately craves. If you tend to have more oily skin, stick to either mineral powder foundations or oil-free liquid foundations. Powder foundations help control shine without adding any excessive dryness to your skin!

This step might be a little more difficult, especially if you aren’t purchasing from a department store that allows you to sample different foundations and shades. One helpful tip is to choose 2-3 shades that look similar to your skin tone, and try to hold them up to your face in an available mirror with natural lighting. As the seasons change, you may need to buy different shades depending on if your skin tends to darken in the summer and lighten in the winter.

Now that you’ve determined your skin type and shade, you need to know how to properly apply the foundation! To avoid the obvious makeup line around your face, try using a foam sponge to easily blend the foundation throughout your face. By doing so, the makeup appears more natural to the eye. To finish, lightly dust your face with some loose powder, and you're ready to go!

Makeup brush care

Why clean your brushes?

Old makeup, facial oils, bacteria and dead skin cells get trapped in your brush, causing uneven coverage and even acne!

  • Dish soap
  • Warm water
  • 2 washcloths or dish towels

Step 1 – Always keeping the brush with the bristles facing down, run the head of the brush under warm water, loosening the dirt and oil in the bristles.

Step 2 – Apply a pea sized amount of dish soap in the palm of your hand and lightly scrub the head of the brush in your palm. Continuously make circular motions with the brush in the palm of your hand until all of the dirt, oil and dead skin cells are removed form your brush.

Step 3 – Again, keeping the bristles facing down, thoroughly wash away all the soap. Squeeze the head of the brush to make sure there is no residue left within the bristles. Now you’re left with a squeaky clean makeup brush!

Step 4 – Let the brushes dry overnight. Lay 1 towel flat, and roll the other towel up to prop up the handles of the brushes while drying. If you let the brushes dry overnight laying flat, or with the bristles pointing up, you risk loosening the glue within the brush head that keep the bristles in place.
