Learning to Love The Skin You're In

Happy New Year! Can you believe we’ve officially rounded the corner into a new year? It doesn’t seem possible but here we are. In honor of the new year, we want to share some of our favorite resolutions to help get your 2019 started on the right foot. With today being the first day of the year, we really wanted to start off with a bang and an issue that is so near and dear to our hearts: self care and self love. This year, we challenge you to find peace and acceptance on your journey to self love, because regardless of where you are in your journey, you deserve to love yourself exactly the way you are at all times. It’s great to want to improve yourself, self-improvement is what keeps us moving forward, but just because you want to continue to grow as a person and move towards your goals does not mean that you cannot and should not love yourself while you’re working your way there.

Image Source: The Law of Attraction

Image Source: The Law of Attraction

We think that a big part of learning to love yourself again is actually focusing on self care. We so easily break promises to ourselves and put others’ needs before our own. This year, it’s time to turn the focus back onto ourselves and our own mental health. Have you ever heard the analogy of “filling your cup?” So many people have empty cups because they’re too busy pouring into others. Think of it this way: if you instead tried to do things to help you fill your own cup, eventually it would overflow and then fill others! That’s why we’re going to take time to work on numero uno. Read a book, take a walk, write in a journal. Find your bliss. What brings you joy? What helps you find relaxation? These are the questions you need to answer and actively make choices to do these things.

Along with this is also removing toxic situations and people from your life. If there’s someone bringing you down, or bringing you stress or sadness, consider removing them from your life. Life is too short to be anything but happy. If there are toxic relationships, or environments, or other commitments you have in your life: remove them! If your job makes you miserable, start hunting for a new one! Part of finding your joy and taking care of your mental health means removing the negative too.

Quick Tips to Get You Started:

1. A Gratitude Journal. We love starting our day by writing down all the things we’re grateful for. Right now, we’re obsessed with Rachel Hollis’s Start Today journals. Even if a new journal isn’t in your budget, grab a notebook and start each day by writing down 5 things you’re grateful for that day. Not big picture things, but small things that are specific to that day. Also write down 10 goals for yourself and pick which one you’re going to work to achieve first. This is the same set up of the Start Today journal and we truly believe it’s a recipe for success!

2. Fill Your Feeds with Love. Start your year with a full social media sweep. If you find yourself comparing or envious of other people showing up in your feed, remove them! If it’s not something that lifts you up and inspires you or makes you happy, it has no place in your life anymore. Good vibes only!

3. Unplug. If you’re struggling with #2, try just unplugging from social media for a bit. We’ve found that taking a social media cleanse can be a magical thing. At first you may have some fomo, but after the first few days, you’ll see how it’s almost like a weight lifted off your shoulders. Not to mention it’ll free up a bunch of time with you not sitting and mindlessly scrolling as much.

4. Create a Vision Board. What do you see your year looking like? What are your goals and dreams? This comes back to focusing on YOU first! Put together a vision board filled with all the hopes and dreams you have for yourself over the next year and beyond.

5. Meditate. If you’ve never tried meditation, we highly recommend it. This is so good for you mentally. Take even just five minutes each day to yourself and just sit with the silence and be still. We love guided meditations, especially for beginners. There are tons of great free resources available online for this too! Our favorite is definitely Calm, which also has a convenient app. The first bit is free with options for premium to gain access to hundreds of additional meditations as you get more into things.

Let’s make 2019 the best year yet, especially when it comes to our self care and mental health! Cheers!

Happy New Year... Let's Get Married!

Happy New Year’s Eve! We love celebrating New Year’s and all that it entails and represents. The idea of giving yourself a fresh start, new goals, a new attitude, etc. is amazing and we fully endorse it! Along with that, we love the idea of combining New Year’s with a wedding! Of all the holidays to combine your nuptials with, NYE seems like the most perfect choice. Why not start a new year with a new name and a new level of your relationship? And talk about one heck of a party! With that in mind, we’re sharing some of our favorite inspiration for a NYE wedding! Think old Hollywood glamour -- lots of bling and sparkle, champagne, sparklers, confetti, horns -- the whole nine yards. For colors, stick with metallics and a neutral palette -- blacks and whites with gold and silver. Dance the night away and kiss that new spouse of yours at midnight. Happy New Year!

Rock New Year's Eve with These Trendy Looks!

Can you believe that we’re only days away from New Year’s Eve? Man did the year fly right by us! If you’re searching for some last-minute outfit inspiration, we’re here to help. We want to wrap up 2018 with style and by making a statement. On that note, we’re looking at all things sparkly! We love a good sequined skirt. Dresses, shorts, jumpers, you name it! If it’s sparkly, we like it. If sequins aren’t your jam, how about some velvet? Such a great style and perfect for the winter weather! If your plans are more casual, go for a fun backless top for a more understated yet still show stopping look. Cheers to putting a cap on 2018, we can’t wait to see all that 2019 has in store!

Get in Shape for the New Year

One of the most common resolutions people have is to get in shape. But the majority of people never through! This can be credited to a variety of reasons, one of which is being unprepared. Be sure to consult your physician if you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to participate in increased physical activity.

How to Start

A great way to establish a basic level of fitness is simply walking every day. Hitting at least 10,000 steps every day is a good start on your road to fit. Walking is a low impact form of cardio that gets the body moving and heart rate up without being too intense. In addition to walking, there are a variety of moves you can do at your own home to continue your journey. The best part? You don’t need any equipment! Your own body weight makes these moves beneficial to you. Be sure that you are properly stretching both before and after your workout to avoid any injuries. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid lactic acid build up or cramping in the muscles.

Move #1: Squats

Work that booty! Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and slowly sink your hips back to a 90 degree angle. Be sure to keep your knees behind your toes. Easier variation? Use a wall for support and slide your upper body up and down the wall while completing your squat. Harder variation? Add a little jump between reps to transition into squat jumps! You’ll quickly feel the burn in your quads with this one.

Move #2: Lunges

Lunges also work that booty along with your core and leg muscles. Pick which leg you want to start on and step it back so that both knees are bent at a 90 degree angle. Once again, be sure that your knee is not coming in front of your toe! Variation #1: Pulse while in your lunge to get that burn going. Variation #2: Jump lunges! Instead of stepping back to switch legs, jump!

Move #3: Wall Sits

Similar to the modified squat, position yourself with your back against the wall. Slowly slide yourself down until your legs are at a 90 degree angle, keeping your knees behind your toes. Sit here and hold for as long as you can! You’ll feel this in your thighs and core. Time yourself and try to beat your time from the day before!

Move #4: Push-ups and Burpees

The dreaded push-up. While they seem to be nobody’s favorite, they’re great for your entire body! Easier variation? Drop to your knees instead of your toes! Harder variation? Burpees! Start on your feet, drop down, jump your feet back, do your push up, jump your feet back in, stand up, and take another little jump, and repeat!

Move #5: Jumping Jacks

A childhood favorite. Jumping jacks are a great, fun cardio move you can do to get that heartbeat pumping. Be sure to fully extend your arms and hold that core tight! Need an easier variation? Instead of jumping, step one foot out and then back in, alternating sides. Lower impact but still gets the blood pumping!

Move #6: Planks

Another great full-body move. Perform this in low-plank on your elbows or in high-plank on your hands. Easier variation? Drop to your knees! Harder variation? Try some side planks. Stack your feet and raise your off-hand into the air. See how long you can hold your plank and try to beat it the next day!

Move #7: Leg Raises

Lay on your back. Place your hands underneath you at the small of your back for some extra support. Keeping them straight, raise your legs into the air as far as you can, bending at the hip, with the goal being to get them straight into the air, perpendicular to the ground. Slowly lower them back towards the ground without actually touching, and raise again. Do both legs together or switch off sides!

Move #8: Crunches

Work that core with some crunches. Crunches are great because there are so many variations you can try. Straight leg crunches, side crunches, or step it up and go for the full sit up. Try a fun alternative and using an exercise ball to spice things up. Regardless of what variation you try, make sure you hold your core tight.

Move #9: Glute Bridges

Booty, booty, booty! Lay with your back on the floor, knees bent with feet on the floor. Squeeze your core and thrust your hips into the air, squeezing your glute muscles at the top. To increase difficulty, raise one leg up off the ground and continue the move the same way.

Move #10: Mountain Climbers

Mountain climbers quickly get the blood pumping and your breathing spiked. Drop down into a high plank and start toe tapping upwards. The more skilled and fit you are, the quicker you can go. Start nice and slow, focusing on form and precision.

Our Best Healthy Eating Tips to Stay on Track this Winter

Eating healthier is one of the top New Year’s resolutions on everybody’s list. So, today we are going to focus on ways to make that resolution stick! Here are our best tips on how to begin and maintain a healthy eating lifestyle!

Before you start on your health food journey you should know what “healthy foods” are. The best foods for your body are natural foods such as fruits, veggies, meat, and limited natural sugars (honey, maple syrup) and grains. You should eliminate as much processed food as you can, and avoid products with MSG, carrageenan, or sulfites. Throw away all processed food when beginning your journey so you have no temptations!

Junk food and desserts should not be a common staple in your diet, treating yourself once and awhile is OK and good for your mental health. Treat yourself as a reward for finishing a big project or reaching a new goal; it should be a positive reinforcement. Never treat yourself when having a bad day or for a negative circumstance.

  • Eat organically
  • Eat grass-fed and cage free meat/eggs/dairy
  • Buy locally from farms or markets (fresh food is good food!)
  • Meal plan for the week and stick to it
  • Meal prep
  • Always have chopped veggies and fresh fruit to snack on
  • Cook from scratch
  • Make bone broth and keep it in the freezer for quick soups or when needed in recipes
  • Invest in a few good kitchen tools (crockpot, blender, cast iron pan, veggie noodler, and knife sharpener)
  • Buy a few cookbooks and learn a few staple dishes
  • Make your own salad dressings and condiments (it’s easier than you think!)
  • Don’t be afraid to try new food
  • Learn some easy food substitutes such as coco aminos for soy sauce, olive oil for butter, zoodles or spaghetti squash for pasta, and seltzer for soda
  • Eat protein with every meal so you stay fuller longer
  • Use nuts instead of croutons in salads
  • Eat correct portion sizes
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit your juice intake, and replace juice with water infused with citrus, herbs, and fruit.
  • If you are craving something sweet eat fruit, coconut, or even pickles (yes, pickles!) instead
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Stock up your spice cabinet. It is the best way to add flavor to your food with fewer calories.
  • Learn to say no to fast food or any bad foods
  • Limit your sodium intake
  • Stock your freezer with frozen fruit and veggies! It’s great for smoothies, oatmeal, and even cooking!
  • Stock your pantry with canned fruits and veggies, as long as it is canned in its natural juices or water
  • Try to eat fish 2-3 times a week for an easy way to add omega-3 to your diet
  • Learn how to read nutrition labels
  • Use fresh herbs

Declutter and Organize Your Home with These Easy Tips!

PHOTO: Simply Organized

PHOTO: Simply Organized

Today’s resolution is focused on decluttering! We all have clothes piling up in our closet or trinkets thrown in drawers to be forgotten about; meanwhile, we complain about how we need more space! Well, it is finally time to take control of our belongings and declutter and organize our homes! To help you let go of your belongings we are sharing our best tips to successfully declutter!

Before you begin, you may be a little hesitant; you love your things and can’t image a world without them! In order to be successful in this resolution, try changing your perspective. Know that a tidy home is a tidy mind. It has been proven that people who live in organized homes are happier and healthier than those who live in clutter and disorganization, so why not give decluttering a try! Also, remember that most of your unused possessions can help out others in need, which is another great motivator!

PHOTO: Martha Stewart

PHOTO: Martha Stewart

  • Give away one item each day.
  • Set a timer for 5-10 minutes every day devoted to decluttering.
  • Grab two large trash bags at the beginning of each month and fill one with trash and one with donations.
  • Make a list of areas in your home and focus on one area at a time.
  • Take the 12-12-12 challenge: throw away 12 items, donate 12 items, and return 12 items to their proper place.
  • Do the four box method: fill keep, donate, throw away/recycle, and relocate boxes for each area of the house.
  • Start by clearing/organizing all the flat surfaces in your home.
  • If you haven’t worn an article of clothing or a pair of shoes in the last two years you probably never will-let it go!
  • If unsure whether to keep that shirt you may or may not wear, try it on and see how it fits. If it fits and looks good keep it for another 3 months. If you don’t wear it by then donate it! If it doesn’t fit, or you have any hesitation to how you look, donate it now!
  • Money is motivation-set a goal to host a yard sale with all of your unused stuff.
  • Throw away all expired makeup.
  • Hold an item in your hand for 5 seconds, if it does not bring you happiness you don’t need it.
  • Don’t bring in any new items until your decluttering is complete.
  • Don’t forget the larger items in your home! If you have a table you never use or an old chair, rehome it!
  • Get rid of any mismatched Tupperware! It can always be replaced and you probably have more than you need anyways.
  • Tackle that junk drawer last! If there isn’t a place to put something throw it out! No more junk drawers!

  • Make sure every item in your home has a designated place.
  • Invest in a filing cabinet or accordion folder to organize all the important papers you need to keep a hold of.
  • Invest in furniture with multiple purposes such as a storage bench.
  • When bringing in new furniture, the less drawers the better! It eliminates the habit of building up clutter!
  • Get rid of all the cardboard boxes in your pantry! Use clear and labeled storage containers! It will be easier to assess when you are low on rice and need to shop!
  • Take advantage or wasted space, such as the sides of cabinets and in insides of doors.
  • Buy drawer organizers for your office, kitchen, makeup, and anything you try to hide away.
  • When a space is successfully organized, it should not take you more than 3 seconds to find something.
  • Make your bed every morning. A made bed automatically makes the whole bedroom look more organized.
  • Clean out and organize your fridge every other month. No one wants a dirty fridge or expired dressing!
PHOTO: The Waves We Make

PHOTO: The Waves We Make

  • Keep only seasonal clothing in your closet. Store the rest in the attic or basement until it is time to change over your closet again. While changing over your closet, be mindful of items you did not wear and consider donating them.
  • If you don’t have storage space for non-seasonal clothing, put those towards the top or back of your closet.

Healthy Habits to Kick off the New Year Right

In his book, Hal discusses the six healthy habits that everyone should start their day with, he calls them the Life S.A.V.E.R.S. and they can be done in as few as six minutes every day! Building off of this, we’re sharing our top picks for healthy habits everyone should work to create in this new year!

Making Your Bed Every Morning

If the first thing you do each and every morning is make your bed, congratulations, you’ve already done one productive thing today! This small task can set the tone for your day and kickstart your productivity. And, it also makes your room look so much tidier!

Did you know that some of the most successful people meditate? It’s true! Taking even just a few minutes each morning (and again before bed if you can!) to clear your mind is immensely beneficial. This helps you to regain focus and clarity in your life. Meditation is also helpful if you suffer from anxiety! For beginners, try some guided meditation through an app on your phone like Calm or Headspace to get started.

Journaling is a great way to collect your thoughts. Whether it’s just a review of your day, your goals, or even a list of things that you’re thankful of! Writing is so therapeutic and a great way to work through different situations. Building off of each day, it’s a great way to keep track of your progress and have something tangible you can review at the end of the year to see just how far you’ve come.

Getting Enough Sleep

In the era of the side-hustle, we tend to always be on the go and in constant motion. It’s important to take care of your body, unplug, and get enough sleep! While it may take a few extra hours out of your day, it will make the time you’re awake for more productive. And, making sure you get enough sleep helps keep your immune system strong; no one has time to be sick! Start off this new year fresh and well-rested to avoid a burnout.

Drinking Enough Water

Hydration, hydration, hydration! Did you know that you’re supposed to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day?! So, if you weigh 120 lbs, you should be drinking 60 oz of water a day. Being hydrated has so many benefits: cleansing your system and flushing out bad bacteria, keeping your skin clear, better digestion, fewer headaches, increases energy, relieves fatigue, and countless more. If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated! Drink up!

Making Yourself a Priority

In the wise words of Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle, “treat yo’self!” With all of our hectic schedules and mile-long to do lists, it’s easy to push our needs to the side. Make sure to set some time aside to do something for yourself. Whether it’s buying yourself a small something or even just taking a nice relaxing bath, self-care and self-love should be a priority in the upcoming year!

Whether you’re looking for fruity, minty, or jello-filled, we have you covered. What drink will you be ringing in the new year with?

  1. Combine the Triple Sec, blackberry brandy, Chambord, and pineapple juice in a large pitcher or punch bowl. Cover and store in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight.
  2. Just before serving, add the Triple Sec mixture, ginger ale and the champagne together in a large punch bowl. Serve over ice and garnish with fresh raspberries if desired.

  • a few sprigs of mint
  • 1 lemon, zest only
  • 750ml Fairtrade Moscato Rosé or sparkling Pinot Rosé, chilled

  1. Chill six Champagne glasses, then add the following to each: 2-3 raspberries, 1 mint leaf and 1 tiny sliver of lemon zest.
  2. Carefully pop the cork of a 750ml bottle of chilled Fairtrade Moscato Rosé or sparkling Pinot Rosé. Pour slowly into each glass.

1st champagne layer

  • 1 1/2 cups champagne
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 gelatin packet

Creamy layer

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 gelatin packet

2nd champagne layer

  • 1 1/2 cups champagne
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 gelatin packet

For the rim

  • gold sprinkles
  • corn syrup

  1. Gently pour the champagne into a mixing bowl.
  2. Measure out 1/2 cup of boiling water in a separate bowl then add 1 gelatin packet to the water, gently stirring.

  3. Once combined, pour the water/gelatin mixture into the champagne and gently stir.

  4. Divide the champagne jello into glasses. If you want the jello to set at an angle, place the glasses in a muffin or mini muffin pan at an angle to set in the refrigerator.

  5. Once the champagne jello has set, begin to prepare the creamy layer.

  6. In a mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup of boiling water. Stir to combine.

  7. In a separate bowl, combine the 1/2 cup cold water and 1 gelatin packet. Stir to mix. Allow the gelatin mixture to set for 2-3 minutes.

  8. Pour the gelatin mixture into the sweetened condensed milk mixture and stir to combine.

  9. Divide the creamy layer into the glasses. If you want the jello to set at an angle, place the glasses in a muffin or mini muffin pan at an angle to set in the refrigerator.

  10. Repeat the instructions for the champagne layer to add the final layer to the cups.

  11. Use a small amount of corn syrup and your finger, a small metal spatula or a small new paint brush to dab a little bit of corn syrup all around the rim of the glass.

  12. Then turn the glass upside down into a shallow bowl of sprinkles, moving it around until the rim is covered.

  13. Serve the jello or refrigerate until ready to serve.

New Year's Entertaining Guide

FontCandy (9).png

New Year’s Eve is only a few days away, and we wanted to make sure your party is the best of the year! To help you with your hosting duties, we created a New Year’s Entertaining Guide! It covers all the inspiration you will need from food to decor! Happy hosting!

New Year’s Eve is all about dancing around and having fun! Your should serve a variety of h'dourves so your guests can move and eat! Here are some amazing recipes to inspire you:

Make festive drinks, stock your bar cart, or make a pitcher or two of your favorite drinks! Don’t forget to pour some champagne for the midnight countdown!

Since you are serving h’dourves, a set dinner table is unnecessary. Opt for New Year’s themed flatware, dishes, and cups, and lean towards a silver and gold color scheme. If planning a fancier evening, serve drinks in glasses and offer ornate small plates for guests to place their h’dourves.

There are so many options for your New Year’s Eve decor! Be fun and hand out 2018 themed glasses, hats, party blowers, etc. and create a photo booth! Or take a more classy approach and decorate with silver and gold orbs, garlands, and vases.

Your outfit should be comfortable, yet fashionable; you want to wow your guests with your style! This is the one time a year where sparkle is acceptable and expected, so don’t waste the opportunity!

You don't want to have one overwhelm the other.  We loved this inspiration from A Savy Event. Mixing silver and gold design elements showcases the glamour of the evening but also is an elegant wedding color palette!

Now this is a party! We love this rich and moody color palette designed by Beijos Events. Think geometric shapes, a bar cart filled with bubbly and confetti.  The richness of this look is accomplished by mixing deep jewel tones including pink, green and blue. Don't forget to add elements of gold to round out the look.

Want to throw a bash for your besties? Sounds fabulous! We loved this girly, gilded and spunky design from Francine Ribeau Events. To capture this fun look layer different patterns, go for stripes and chevron. Use black accents as your base and glitter the room with golds and pinks!
